About the Journal

International academic semi-annual journal that publishes works on Polish and European cultural history (especially literature, art and music) of the Baroque period

The journal was founded in 1994 on the initiative of a group of humanists from University of Warsaw headed by Professor Janusz Pelc, who became the first editor-in-chief of the journal. The first issue was published by Semper, subsequent issues were published by Neriton (2-52) and by Faculty of Polish Studies of
University of Warsaw (53-56). Beginning with volume 57-60, the publisher of the journal is Warsaw University Publishers.
After Janusz Pelec's death in 2005, Juliusz Chrościcki became the editor-in-chief, followed by Radoslaw Rusnak in 2024. From the beginning of its existence, the journal aims to be a platform for the exchange of ideas for researchers representing various fields of the humanities (history, history of literature, history of art, musicology...), and interested in the culture of the Baroque period, both the native one and the Baroque on a European scale. Over the past three decades, “Barok” has also lived to see several special foreign-language issues: an Italian (2005), German (2006), Swedish (2007) and Hungarian (2010) issue. From the beginning of its existence, moreover, its pages were open to authors from abroad.
