Naming motivations in people of Ukrainian origin living in Poland: Survey data analysis

Olga Adamska

Abstract

The article explores motives behind naming children of Ukraine-born people living in Poland whose children were born in the years 2006–2024. The topic is particularly noteworthy in view of the sizeable Ukrainian minority in Poland and the exceptional geopolitical and social circumstances of both countries. The research material was collected by means of an online-based Google Forms survey. The results yielded 49 answers regarding 67 children, and 82 names in total. The majority of parents justified their choices with aesthetic reasons, international aspects, comprehensibility in both Polish and Ukrainian, emphasis on nationality, and uniqueness. The motives reported by informants have been examined individually and classified into ten categories that emerged during the analysis. The article discusses these categories in detail. Overall, the answers provided by parents indicate that they are following the general contemporary naming trends.
