Names in action: Surnames with words with moral appraisal in the background

Iza Matusiak-Kempa

Abstract

The article discusses personal names derived from appellatives from the perspective of their role in the consolidation of socially accepted values. The analysis of personal names represents the sociolinguistic and ethnolinguistic perspective, in which language is seen as a tool of communication, a reservoir of knowledge about people and their culture, as well as an instrument of exerting influence over human attitudes. In the paper, meaningful personal names are treated as specific language signs, which are the abbreviations of specific descriptors, i.e., labels identifying a person through their characteristic features. Personal names as carriers of condensed content referring to the identifi ed persons are perceived as special messages which play an important role in shaping human attitudes and consolidating the value system of a given community.
